In corn, it is more effective than glufosinate. In wheat, bialaphos was the most reliable selection criteria used to identify bar transformed plants. Once introduced into a nonresistant plant cell, bialaphos is hydrolyzed and converted to phosphinothricin through the phosphinothricin acetyl transferase
