Free-standing lipid vesicles, formed by spherical assemblies of lipid bilayers that enclose an aqueous compartment, are commonly used model membranes, and they are classified by size: small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs), which are less than 50 nm in size, large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs), which are between 100 nm and 1 m in size, and giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs), which are larger than 1 m (Figure 2A)
